Tuero, the sustainable management of industrial organic waste

Tuero is a company located in Venta de Baños (Palencia) dedicated to the environmental management of organic waste from the food industry and agriculture. It has a recently constructed biogas plant, which was put into operation and is managed by Genia Global. On the one hand, the biogas produced is used for self-consumption, and on the other hand, the “digestate” is used for compost and fertilisers that are reused in the food industry and in agriculture. This is a perfect example of a circular economy. Tuero makes the entire agri-food chain more efficient: it adds value to the remaining byproduct from production that is not intended for human consumption, converting it into a suitable product for the manufacture of feed, digestion for the fields or vehicule fuel for our lorries.

The objective of the plant is to achieve zero waste disposal and this is done by obtaining value from waste in the form of energy and fertilisers that return to the economic cycle through a natural organic treatment. The biogas obtained in the Tuero plant is used as fuel in its own processes in the food industry, while organic fertilisers (as a liquid and compost) are applied in the fields to obtain the raw material for that industry to improve productivity. This plant manages sewage sludge from the agri-food industry, organic slaughterhouse waste and plant waste and recovers it for the production of biogas and organic fertiliser through anaerobic biodigestion at its plant. It is important to treat the waste previously, to ensure the correct proportion of substrate to be fed to the digester, manage “the additives required to activate the digester”, and control the digestion times.

This process of anaerobic biodigestion consists of the fermentation of organic waste by bacteria in the absence of oxygen. The resulting gas can be applied both in industrial processes and to produce electricity or can be refined and injected into the grid or used as automotive fuel. In this case, it is used directly in processes in the food industry. In addition to gas, compost and high-quality liquid biofertilizer are generated. With this treatment, waste that posed a threat to the environment and a cost to companies due to the need for its treatment are incorporated into the circular economy, generating sustainable energy and high-quality organic fertilizers.

Last Friday, 15 May, we completed the installation of a gas holder at SubProductos Tuero S.L.’s biogas plant in Venta de Baños. With this action, we transformed a digestate tank into a post-digester, increasing the capacity and versatility of the plant, improving emission and odour control, as well as increasing the biogas storage capacity and adapting to demand.
