TITLE: Research and Development of a Digital Twin with Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Biogas Production from Livestock Waste.
This project has received support from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan in the 2022 (AIE) Call for Innovative Business Association grants aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises.

DIGITALTWIN4BIOGAS
DIGITALTWIN4BIOGAS is a pioneering project in the renewable gas sector that aims to improve the profitability and sustainability of biogas production plants by using advanced digital technologies, particularly digital twins and artificial intelligence.
This industrial research project will design and develop a digital twin based on artificial intelligence to improve the viability of biogas production plants and provide a sustainable solution for treatment of organic waste with a high environmental impact. Specifically, the project will analyse facilities that produce biogas from valorisation of livestock waste such as pig manure and animal by-products not intended for human consumption (ABNIHC) that originate in the food industry.
innovation
DIGITALTWIN4BIOGAS is led by Aragón Innovalimen (the Aragon Food Cluster) in conjunction with the Iberian Association of Natural Gas, Hydrogen and Renewable Gas for Mobility (GASNAM) as the second cluster which will coordinate the project’s dissemination and communication actions. Other partners include the specialised bioenergy firm Genia Bioenergy, the technological company Soluciones Cuatroochenta (Grupo 480) and Ganadera Unida Comarcal (GUCO), a member of the Arcoiris Group.
Grupo 480 will lead development of the mathematical modelling and prediction systems for the behaviour of machines and biogas production processes in collaboration with Genia Bioenergy, an engineering firm that specialises in the design, operation and maintenance of biogas plants that manage agri-food waste, particularly livestock waste, by creating virtual models and a digital twin that optimises the operation of said plants. GUCO, a leading pig-raising company and member of the Aragon Food Cluster, is the most important pork producer in the Matarraña region (Teruel) where the Valderrobres biogas plant – one of those studied in the project – is located. GUCO will participate in the initial phase of the project; production, collection and pre-treatment of the livestock waste.
Successful implementation of the project requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines various fields of knowledge and integration of all the players involved in the biogas production value chain in addition to technological agents with the capacity to add value to innovative developments aimed at optimising the biogas production process.
The pioneering project DIGITALTWIN4BIOGAS will research and develop a digital twin to improve the efficiency and the environmental sustainability of biogas production plants that process livestock waste.
DigitalTwin4Biogas will focus on the design and development of a digital twin of a biogas plant located in Valderrobres in the province of Teruel. Using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning,a vitual replica of the plant that processesmanure and other organic animal waste will be created to improve its profitability and sustainability.
In this initial phase Cuatroochentaexperts in artificial intelligence, will lead development of the mathematical modelling, simulation and prediction systems for the machine behaviour and biogas production processes in collaboration with Genia Bioenergy.
The project aims to encounter a sustainable solution for the treatment of organic waste by means of the digital twin.
The expected outcomes include increased biogas production per ton of waste in biogas plants and reduction of the operational costs associated with waste management, thereby enhancing the decarbonisation potential of the renewable gas produced in this type of plant.
DIGITALTWIN4BIOGAS is led by the Aragon Food Cluster (Aragón Innovalimen) with the participation of , as the second cluster Gasnam – Neutral Transport responsible for coordinating the project’s dissemination and communication activities. The project also involves the specialised bioenergy company Genia Bioenergy, the technological group Cuatroochenta and Ganadera Unida Comarcal (GUCO), a livestock company member of the Arcoiris Group.
